Ticketing Fee Calculation

When registrants buy tickets through a credit card, a credit card processing fee is part of the charge. As an event admin, you can add the fee on top of the ticket price or include it in the ticket price. The fees are collected by your payment processor, Stripe or Square. Accelevents do not take a percentage of the credit card fees. In this article, you'll learn how to calculate the fees using our formula.

Absorb or Pass the Fees

Accelevents allows you to have your ticket purchasers pay the Stripe/Square credit card processing fee as a part of their checkout process, meaning this cost will not impact the cost of your event. However, it will increase the buyer's total payment.

When you pass the fees to the ticket buyer, the fee is added on top of the ticket price, thus increasing the final payment amount charged to the buyer.

When you absorb the fees, the buyer will pay only for the ticket price. You will shoulder the credit card processing fees, which will be deducted from your revenue.

Processing Fee Breakdown

To understand how the credit card fees are calculated, we need to break down the fees involved:

Stripe/Square Fixed Fee = $0.30
Stripe/Square % (per transaction) = 2.9% = 0.029

As mentioned above, these fees can be added to the ticket price, but it's not straightforward to compute. You'll need to follow the formula below to get an accurate computation matching what you see in your admin console and Stripe account.

Go to Stripe or Square to learn more about processing fees.

Calculate the Total Charge (Passed Fees)

Use the formula below to learn how to get the total charge when you pass the fees to the buyer.

Formula:

If you replace the formula with actual numbers at $10 as the ticket price, it will look something like this:

To get 0.971, first, you need to convert the Stripe percentage to a number (2.9% = 0.029). Then, follow the formula (1-Stripe %). 1 - 0.029 = 0.971

Calculate the Total Revenue (Absorb Fees)

Use the formula below to compute the total revenue when you absorb the fees.

Formula:

If you replace the formula with actual numbers at $10 as the ticket price, it will look something like this:

To get the total fees ($0.59), subtract the total revenue from the ticket price.

Computation With Different Fees

  • For European transactions, Stripe applies a .20 + 1.4% fee. You can use the same formula above and replace the Stripe amount accordingly.

  • If your contract states additional ticketing fees, follow the formula below.

  • If you added TAX or VAT, there can be four scenarios on how to compute this, depending on your setup. Check the articles on Sales Tax and VAT to learn more.
